Solar Panel Art Collective Endeavor

Solar Artwork

Solar panels are an increasingly important source of renewable power that will play an essential role in the energy future. They are also complex pieces of technology that become big, bulky sheets of electronic waste when no longer functional. Unfortunately, solar recycling is an expensive option compared with disposing solar panels at the landfill.

In collaboration with Wyoming artists and The U.S. Department of Energy, we began exploring creative repurposing of solar panels. We began our end-of-life solar art project - The Solar Panel Art Collective Endeavor (SPACE) in March 2021.

Through this project, artists repurpose donated panels as a medium to be sold as artwork and functional outdoor decor. They can be showcased and sold in galleries, in a home or business, or outdoors as eye-catching pieces of public art. This creative solar project can utilize single panels for individual art pieces or multiple panels for mural installations.

Polly Burge

Completed in the Spring of 2022, this panel was donated to the Honnold Foundation. Proceeds from a fundraiser featuring the panel brought in over $6,500 to their nonprofit focused on equitable solar access.

Ashley Cooper

Ashley’s “Big Art” bison skull solar panel has been on display at the Bighorn Design Studio since August 2021. Her second solar panel titled “Home” is displayed at her own studio in downtown Sheridan, WY.
